A union representing about 1,300 employees at Stanford University and a comparable number at the school’s medical center will kick-off a 24-hour strike Monday at 5 a.m. and establish its primary picket line outside Stanford Hospital’s emergency room, according to union organizers.
Service Employees International Union Local 715 represents university employees including maintenance, laboratory support and food service workers, and about 1,300 Stanford hospital employees, including nursing assistants, housekeepers and anesthesia technicians.
According to Zev Kvitky, union spokesman for the university workers, multiple picket lines will be set up on campus but strikers will primarily congregate outside the emergency room and in front of the main gate at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center.
The goal of this is (to show we are) serious and we are not going to tolerate (management) refusing to negotiate with us,” said Kvitky. "We want them to come back to the table.”
Negotiations for the two groups have some overlapping sticking points, including the employees’ demands for more comprehensive health insurance.
Alan Acosta, associate vice president of public affairs for Stanford University responded to the union’s announcement and said the university is still hopeful negotiations will yield a new contract.
"We believe our salary and benefits package reflects both the excellence of our organization and the quality of our workforce, as evidenced by the fact that each year, more than 50,000 people apply for jobs at Stanford,’’ Acosta said in a statement.
