Twelve local high schools scored in the top 6 percent nationwide, according to a Newsweek ranking released this week.
Five schools in the San Mateo Union High School District, three in the Sequoia Union High School District and three schools from Palo Alto or Los Altos were listed in the top 1,500 public schools on a Newsweek ranking released this week.
Gunn High School in Palo Alto was at the top of the local list with a rank of 114. In San Mateo County, Summit Preparatory High in Redwood City took the top spot at 118, followed by Millbrae’s Mills High School at 283.
"We believe that every student can achieve at the highest academic level if given the opportunity and the right support,” Summit Prep Executive Director Todd Dickson said in a prepared statement. "It’s exciting to watch our students successfully rise to the challenge of college level coursework, especially considering that about 75 percent of our students would not be in the AP track at a traditional comprehensive high school.”
Public schools were ranked according to a ratio created by Newsweek education reporter Jay Matthews. The number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and Cambridge tests taken by all students at the school in 2008 is divided by the number of graduating seniors.
