A former teacher's aide, Trinicia Makasini, 22 at Turnbull Learning Academy in San Mateo is being charged with statutory rape after she allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old student in 1997.
According to the District Attorney handling the case, Linda Eufusia, the relationship was not disclosed for some time and the police conducted an investigation and finally pressed charges in 1999.
Makasini had a baby as a result of the relationship in May of 1998. She currently has custody of the child.
Makasini and the victim are currently on a no-contact order by the court. According to Eufusia, the two were no longer involved at the time of the child's birth.
Eufusia said Makasini was working in the summer as a teacher's aide when she met the victim while he was a student at a summer school program.
Eufusia said there are more cases now than there used to be in which the woman is the defendant in a statutory rape case.
"This is more common than it use to be," Eufusia said.
At the pretrial conference on Monday it was confirmed that the jury trial date will be Nov. 27.
