A tsunami warning issued Thursday morning by the National Weather Service for coastal areas of Northern California and Oregon has been canceled after being prompted by an estimated 7.0-magnitude earthquake that was reported off the coast of Humboldt County.
The 7.0 quake at 10:44 a.m. was followed by an estimated 5.8-magnitude quake a few minutes later near Cobb in Lake County and a series of aftershocks after that, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The shaking from the big quake could be felt in many parts of the Bay Area.
The tsunami warning issued by the weather service was in effect from the area of Davenport in Santa Cruz County up into Oregon, but was canceled as of shortly before noon.
BART announced shortly after 11 a.m. that Transbay Tube service was shut down as a result of the quake and tsunami warning, but said in an update at about 11:45 a.m. that service was resuming, though with major delays.
Many coastal cities and counties told people to leave areas by the water and to head to higher elevations. The San Francisco Zoo announced that guests have been evacuated and animals and staff are moving to higher ground, among other impacts to attractions and businesses locally.
The Marin County Sheriff's Office reminded residents to avoid calling 911 for updates on the tsunami.
"Please keep the lines available for emergencies only," wrote the Sheriff's Office in a public Facebook post.
Instead, concerned residents can follow tsunami.gov for updates on conditions.
