South San Francisco is moving ahead with a new In-N-Out burger restaurant, making it one of six locations in the county and the first one in the city.
The restaurant property would take up what is currently 932 and 972 El Camino Real, which currently houses a vacant 3,000-square-foot Burger King and mixed-use building. Both would be demolished during development.
Currently, In-N-Out has about five locations throughout the county, including in Daly City, San Carlos, Redwood City and Millbrae.
The new South San Francisco location would comprise a nearly 4,000-square-foot building, with capacity for a total of 112 people in both indoor and outdoor areas. It would also be the city’s first In-N-Out establishment.
The Planning Commission supported the project, with some noting that, despite potential traffic concerns — as well as possible pedestrian safety issues at the intersection — there seems to generally be public support for the new addition.
“Normally when there are traffic issues or neighbor conflict-of-interest issues, there will be a bunch of people objecting,” Planning Commissioner Alex Tzang said during a meeting July 17. “I actually hear that In-N-Out has been praised for being good neighbors and has been supportive.”
Mary Gomes from the Maltese American Social Club, which is located near the proposed In-N-Out, said they have surfaced several concerns with the company during the planning process thus far, and while discussions weren’t “always smooth,” In-N-Out has taken their concerns seriously.
Charles Catania said he hopes In-N-Out will give some commitment to the social club that “they will help us continue to operate.”
The Planning Commission unanimously voted to approve the entitlements. Construction is expected to take about eight months, though the company is still undergoing the permit application process.
