Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian pulled ahead of Assemblymember Evan Low for second place for a second time in the race for the 16th Congressional District seat, left vacant by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo’s retirement.
As of March 15, results show Simitian with 44 more votes than Low, suggesting a continued close race for who will go up against former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo in November. Both have 16.6% of the vote for the seat that will cover portions of San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. On election night, the vote tally showed Simitian ahead of Low, but that shifted to Low ahead by 59 votes Thursday, March 14.
All of the ballots have been counted for San Mateo County except for 450 conditional voter registration ballots, which are completed by those who registered to vote for the first time, or are re-registering, within two weeks of Election Day.

All but 1,500 Conditional Voter Registration ballots, 100 unprocessed provisional ballots — which are typically in-person ballots completed by registered voters who typically vote by mail — and 1,300 challenged ballots have been counted in Santa Clara County.
Liccardo has 21.2% of the vote, with 38,361 total votes.
Low declined to comment but Simitian said he remains optimistic as the final votes are counted.
“Well, it’s certainly been a long week, a little bit of a roller-coaster ride. And a reminder of just how many good folks lent their support to our effort. So I want to say thank you,” he said.
