A $3.15 million settlement has been reached against three pest control service companies illegally disposing of toxic pesticides and mishandling customer records in 12 California counties, including San Mateo County, per a press release from the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
The three companies — Clark Pest Control of Stockton, Orkin Services of California and Crane Pest Control — are owned by Georgia-based Rollins Inc., according to the press release Nov. 19.
An undercover waste inspection operation conducted from March 2021 to February 2022 found thousands of unlawfully disposed-of toxic and corrosive pesticides and hazardous waste at 40 dumpsters across 22 separate Clark and Orkin facilities across the state, the press release said.
Now, Clark, Orkin and Crane will pay more than $2 million in civil penalties and more than $1 million for investigative costs and supplemental environmental compliance measures and projects.
Over the next five years, the companies will also be required to retain a third-party auditor to conduct dumpster audits, report those findings and mandate waste disposal training programs for employees, the press release said.
“The San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office is dedicated to ensuring that California’s environmental protection laws are followed by all companies doing business in our county and across the state,” San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said in the press release. “Our Environmental Unit will continue to work with San Mateo County regulators and other district attorneys across the state, to investigate and prosecute those who break the law and endanger the health of our citizens and the environment.”
