Friends and family of the San Mateo mother and two sisters killed by their father last week are creating a memorial scholarship for students at Notre Dame High School in Belmont.
"The Nicole, Alexa and Tessa Richards Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund will provide an opportunity for deserving young women to attend this prestigious high school, students who would not otherwise be able to attend," according to a statement released yesterday by friends of Nicole Richards.
On Aug. 18, police found 54-year-old wife Nicole and two daughters, 17-year-old Alexa and 13-year-old Tessa dead in their home's backyard freezer. Husband and father, Tony Richards, called police to report the murders before shooting himself in the head with a shotgun. When police arrived, they found a typed confession by Tony Richards that cited mounting financial problems as reason for the murders.
In fact, Tony Richards was both physically and verbally abusive without a steady source of income. He killed his wife and children after Nicole Richards threatened to divorce him, close friends told the Daily Journal this week.
Oldest daughter Alexa would have been a senior at Notre Dame High School, but was killed before her first day of school. Younger daughter Tessa would have started eighth grade at Bayside Middle School later this month.
To donate to The Nicole, Alexa and Tessa Richards Memorial Endowed Scholarship Fund, send a check to Notre Dame High School, 1540 Ralston Ave., Belmont, Calif., 94002.
