San Mateo law enforcement is sounding the alarm on a popular TikTok trend that involves teenagers taking up fake guns in open spaces and executing a real-world video game.

Police spokesperson Officer Jerami Surratt said there have been two recent instances of high-school aged groups playing a game called Senior Assassin, in which rival teams attempt virtual assassination via water guns. Played with an app called SplashIn, players can track the locations of all those involved and is often played outdoors. But as part of the social media trend, teen players have been encouraged to paint the fake guns black.

For now, it’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye, or much worse. You have to wonder whether some of these kids have a death wish. I hope not, but anyone choosing to walk around private property holding anything that looks like a firearm may result in an end to playing any type of video game.
