Skyline College’s wild 13-11 win Friday over College of San Mateo how the entire Coast Conference North baseball race is shaping up this season.
Vinny Smith
After trading crooked numbers through the early innings, the Trojans (13-5 Coast North, 29-9 overall) used a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead for good over CSM. With the win at Trojan Diamond, Skyline takes outright control of second place in the Coast North. The two teams entered the day tied in the conference standings.
CSM (12-6, 24-13) outhit Skyline 15-14, including a big day from freshman Carter Bleeker. The Bulldogs third baseman went 4 for 4 with two home runs, including a grand slam, and five RBIs. But sophomore Vinny Smith and the Skyline lineup won the day. Smith’s two-run homer in the second broke a 2-all tie, and the Trojans upped the lead to 7-2 on Smith’s RBI groundout in the fourth. CSM fired back with five runs in the top of the fifth, with Bleeker’s slam cutting it to 7-6 and an RBI from Ethan Lopez deadlocking it 7-all.
Skyline answered right back, with Smith capping a three-run outburst with an RBI single. The sophomore finished 2 for 4 with a homer and four RBIs.
First-place Chabot College now leads Skyline by two games in the Coast North standings.
