The ribbon-cutting ceremony for the opening of the newly reconstructed San Mateo County Health Center on Saturday morning may include more than finger sandwiches and pomp and circumstance. Area residents embittered over plans the facility has to serve methadone clients reportedly intend to hold a silent protest on adjacent properties. It is also rumored that some plan to crash the open house by protesting on hospital property.

The celebration for the Health Service Agency will begin 10 a.m. at 222 West 39th Ave. in San Mateo. After a brief ceremony, being held to recognize the completion of a $125 million, six-year project, the doors of the hospital will be opened to the public.
