After a 33-year career in the fire service profession, Ray Iverson — fire chief of the Redwood City Fire Department that serves Redwood City and San Carlos — has announced his retirement, according to the city.
Iverson, who became Redwood City chief in June 2021, will continue to lead the department until his retirement in December. He will focus on succession planning and the development of future leaders, ensuring a smooth transition and continued investment in the department’s growth.
Iverson has served numerous fire departments across Northern California. His previous roles include fire chief of the San Mateo Consolidated Fire Department, assistant chief/fire marshal for Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District, battalion chief/fire marshal with the city of Benicia Fire Department, fire inspector with Contra Costa County Fire Protection District and the city of Vacaville Fire Department, and firefighter with the city of Union City, the city of Vacaville, and the American Canyon Fire Protection District. Iverson currently serves as president of the San Mateo County Fire Chief’s Association and president of the International Fire Service Foundation, and is an adjunct faculty member for City College of San Francisco. He is also a Rotarian of San Mateo and serves as a member of the San Mateo County Historical Association Board of Directors.
Open recruitment will initiate this fall, with the intent to appoint a new chief prior to Iverson’s retirement.
