San Jose police are looking for witnesses to a fatal crash Sunday afternoon in which a 19-year-old driver was ejected and his Ford Mustang torn in half, after what may have been a speeding contest.
The 2:16 p.m. crash took place on Blossom Hill Road, east of Blossom Avenue, according to Sgt. Steve Dixon. The victim, whose name has been withheld, apparently lost control of his 1986 Mustang while speeding westward, striking a curb and then a pole.
After the driver was ejected, the vehicle continued to hurtle down the street for about 100 feet, police said.
Witnesses told officers that the Mustang appeared to be speeding with a second vehicle, a 2001 BMW 330Ci that was driven by Kraig Amador, a 21-year-old Mountain View resident. He was arrested at the scene on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, police said, but then released pending review of the case by prosecutors.
If the witnesses' accounts turn out to be true, the accident would be the second racing-related fatality in the Bay Area in the last week. 19-year-old Sergey Shatsman was killed in San Francisco Wednesday night when the Acura in which he was a passenger ran a stop sign and was broadsided by a Muni train.
San Francisco police are still considering criminal charges, including vehicular manslaughter, against the three drivers involved in that incident, it was reported Friday.
Anyone with information about the San Jose accident is asked to call police Investigator Denise Escobar at (408) 277-4654. People who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (408) 947-STOP.<
