The 26-year-old San Francisco gunman who allegedly shot a man at a San Mateo playground yesterday is now facing murder charges after the victim died following surgery.
Charles Key, 24, of Belmont was shot several times in the back Wednesday afternoon at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Recreation Center on North Eldorado Street between Monte Diablo and Santa Inez avenues. Dwayne Reed, 26, of San Francisco surrendered to SWAT team members shortly after midnight, said San Mateo police Lt. Tom Daughtry.
Key was immediately taken to Stanford Medical Center where he underwent surgery to treat the injuries from several gun shot wounds to the back. Key survived the surgery, but continued to lose blood and died at around 2:30 a.m. yesterday, said a close family friend who wished to remain anonymous.
Before surgery, doctors told Key's family he had a 5 percent chance of living, the friend said.
Key and Reed recently began fighting over a convoluted story involving a girl the men both knew, the friend said.
Key was released from jail a week ago and was visiting the playground when Reed allegedly walked up to him and shot him several times at close range. Reed allegedly walked down the street and slipped into a duplex where his girlfriend lives. He hid there until the SWAT team located him at midnight Wednesday, Daughtry said.
He was taken into custody, questioned and later booked into San Mateo County Jail, Daughtry said.
