High school students who like to help animals can now give their time to San Mateo County shelters and receive community service hours for doing it.
The Peninsula Humane Society, which runs all the shelters in San Mateo County, recently launched Service Saturdays, a program held the first Saturday of each month at an animal shelter.
Projects include shelter beautification, painting, decorating or landscaping, and projects that directly benefit animals such as organizing blanket drives or general shelter upkeep.
Service Saturdays are held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a total of five service hours. Humane Society staff give students a tour of the shelter and a chance to meet some animals up for adoption.
Students are asked to bring a brown bag lunch, and the Humane Society will provide soft drinks.
Space is limited. Those interested in applying should contact Humane Society volunteer manager Brian Probst at (650) 340-7022, ext. 328.<
