Kids on scooters -- they are everywhere. But the City Council in Hillsborough is making the restrictions extremeley clear. Riding "razors", as the scooters are called, is strictly illegal on city streets and sidewalks.
According to Kathy Leroux, the city clerk of Hilsborough, the current law already states that it is unlawful to ride on rollerskates, coasters and skateboards on any road or sidewalk. "This encompasses the scooter," Leroux said.
The City Council is currently updating the code book and the word scooter will be added.
"The law's been on the books for many years but the city will rewrite the ordinance to include scooters," Hillsborough Police Chief Robert McNickel said.
McNickel said the police department gets into disagreements with the kids on the scooters but he believes they are dangerous. "The streets in Hillsborough are very severe and a lot of them are obstructed," he said. "Given the hills we try to discourage people from using [scooters]."
McNickel said a few fifth and sixth graders came before the Council at the last meeting and said they wanted a place to ride the scooters.
"They did a very good job with their presentation -- but it was not good enough to convince us," he said.
According to McNickel there have been no reported "razor" scooter accidents.
