UPDATE:Road closures around the area are continuing through today. The closures include eastbound Broadway at El Camino Real, northbound California Drive at Carmelita Avenue, westbound Broadway at Carolan Avenue and southbound California Drive at Lincoln Avenue. All businesses have power again on Broadway, but it is through generators.
Hazardous material that found its way into a utility box at Broadway and California Drive caused a cleanup effort Wednesday and seized up the intersection as detours were established, according to PG&E officials.
Power was out to the intersection and its traffic light Tuesday night, and continued through the day when a hazardous material cleanup was called after crews inspecting the equipment detected the substance from a third party, Tamar Sarkissian, spokesperson for Pacific Gas and Electric, said.
Out of an abundance of caution, equipment was de-energized and generators were installed, with more en route, to provide power to customers where possible, Sarkissian said.
The traffic light was expected to be restored by Wednesday night, Sarkissian said.
The intersection had separate trouble over the weekend when the Caltrain gate was stuck down for about 10 hours Saturday.
