Maritime enthusiasts and interested community members are invited out to the Port of Redwood City for a day on the Bay to enjoy the water, games and last moments of warm weather on Oct. 4.
The annual Portfest offers attendees to learn about the Bay or enjoy a slew of family friendly activities. This year, the festival’s theme is “Make a Splash” and will be hosted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 4, at 475 Seaport Court.
“Every year, Portfest gives us an opportunity to elevate our waterfront as a lively, community-driven space,” Kristine Zortman, Port of Redwood City executive director, said in a press release. “It’s an event that connects the city to our maritime heritage and reinforces our value as a regional economic engine.”
Attendees have the opportunity to learn about all that occurs within the port’s operations, and aquatic-inspired activities will keep the kids entertained.
New this year will be a splash zone where “Sea Scouts” will be hosting Olympic-style festivities, and a bubble zone where an artist will perform a bubble demonstration from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The first 100 kids will receive a free bubble wand.
Guests can also expect an inflatable slip-n-slide and “aqua tag arena” where competitive kids can navigate an inflatable maze with super-soakers.
For those interested in getting on the water, Redwood Water Sports will host a free stand-up paddleboard group lesson at 10 a.m., and a land-based wing foiling clinch at 1 p.m. Spinnaker Sailing will also provide free 30-minute sailboat rides throughout the event.
A popular aspect of the annual festival is the behind-the-scenes tours of maritime operations. The Port Inside tour brings attendees in to see giant machines in action to turn old cars into scrap metal. The Marine Science Institute will also offer tours of its research vessel, and kids can check out a U.S. Coast Guard patrol boat.
Tours require reservations ahead of time.
As families walk around the waterfront, there will be live music by Wild Child, face painting, popup booths from local organizations and food vendors to purchase grubs. Attendees can connect with local nautical organizations with hands-on activities, and a familiar favorite — Devil’s Canyon Brewery — will return to serve craft beer for purchase.
Portfest has become a Redwood City tradition, and it serves as an opportunity to familiarize residents with the Bayside and all of its offerings. Each programmed event at the port is an opportunity to gain another fan, Zortman said.
