San Mateo police report a woman injured in an alleged drunk-driving accident on Friday is in intensive care at Stanford Medical Center and will not be able to breathe without assistance for at least a week.
Sgt. Hugh Wilkins said the 39-year-old San Mateo resident was injured Friday night when a Toyota Camry driven by a 19-year-old San Jose resident struck her Geo Metro as she approached her driveway on the 800 block of East 19th Street. The Toyota's driver swerved from the eastbound to the westbound lane and hit her car nearly head on.
The woman and her 14-year-old son, who was also in the car, were taken to Stanford Medical Center. The son was treated for minor injuries, but Wilkins said the mother suffered a fracture to her left leg so severe medics feared she might lose her leg, a badly lacerated tongue and injuries to her lungs that currently make it impossible for her to breathe unaided.
Wilkins said the driver of the Camry, Jack Christian Eggleston, was found to have a blood alcohol level of more than .20. After being treated for minor injuries at San Mateo County General Hospital, he was arrested and charged with felony drunk driving.<
