The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors will hold a special meeting 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, to gather public input on the process and procedures to use in filling the sheriff vacancy, including desired qualifications should the Board of Supervisors elect to make an appointment.
The special meeting will allow residents to share their views on the qualities they want in the next sheriff and to inform the board’s decision on whether to appoint a sheriff or call a special election.
The County Charter sets a Nov. 13 deadline to appoint a new sheriff or call for a special election. If the board opts for an election, it could be scheduled between 102 to 131 days from the decision to call the election. But, the board may also choose to align the election with the already-scheduled June 2, 2026, primary election.
The meeting will be in Board Chambers, 500 County Center, Redwood City. The meeting will be streamed live and archived on the County’s public meeting portal: https://sanmateocounty.legistar.com/Calendar.aspx.
