A Pacifica man accused of fatally beating and stabbing an acquaintance more than 50 times at his father's home before trying to clean up the bloody scene appeared in court yesterday, one week after a criminal grand jury indicted him for murder.
Marc Anthony Furlan, 24, is charged with murder by use of a dangerous or deadly weapon in the Oct. 17, 2012 death of 24-year-old Keith Coffey. He had been scheduled for an April 25 preliminary hearing on murder and weapons charges but prosecutors instead opted to seek a criminal indictment first as a way to speed the process along.
"It seemed like we were dealing with a lengthy delay and the case was straightforward so we felt we could expedite it along," said District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
Furlan appeared in court Wednesday for arraignment but put off a plea until April 10.
Furlan and Coffey were acquaintances and reportedly argued before Coffey's death. Prosecutors say Furlan killed Coffey in the Dell Road house and dragged the body outside before trying to clean the scene. Two tenants fled the scene and contacted police who found Coffey in front of the home around 5:15 a.m.
Furlan was reportedly trying to dispose of the body when police arrived and had left a wide swath of blood from the house to outside. His father was not home at the time of the incident.
Coffey's death was the first murder in Pacifica since 2000. A motive in the murder has not been released.
