A townhouse development to be built on land intersected by the San Andreas Fault received approval from South San Francisco officials who lauded the vision for the unique proposal.
The South San Francisco City Council unanimously approved during a meeting Wednesday, March 13, the proposal to construct 22 single-family homes at the corner of Westborough Boulevard and Oakmont Drive.
The decision allows development of the attached units on about half of a 10-acre parcel which is above the San Andreas Fault and requires a unique home building technique to assure its safety.
Vice Mayor Rich Garbarino expressed his appreciation for the creative vision of Warmington Residential, which is proposing to build eight homes at the main intersection, from where a new road would be constructed leading to the remaining 14 units in the interior of the site.
“This is a tough site to start with, I believe. But I commend you for getting the biggest bang for your buck,” said Garbarino, according to video of the meeting.
Councilman Mark Nagales too said he liked the proposal to build a new type of housing in South San Francisco.
“I think this a project we need,” said Nagales.

The project is comprised of seven three-bedroom units, ranging between 1,544 square feet to 2,173 square feet, and 15 four-bedroom units, from 2,441 square feet to 2,616 square feet. All units would be three stories, with a two-car garage on the ground floor, living space in the middle and bedrooms on the top floor, and at least three will be set aside at an affordable rate.
The project is proposed to continue development on a site where 33 similar houses were built, following approval in 2000.
All the units are proposed to share a common wall, but there would be fenced private outside space included as well. There will be common areas reserved for the residents, but the undeveloped portion of much of the site will be open space available to the public. The open space will include a barbecue area, a bocce ball court, fire pits and a large lawn, among other amenities. In all, nearly 70 percent of the nearly 5 acres will be left as open space.
The swath of open space is required by geographic constraints, officials have said, as some of the site is undevelopable due to topography while other portions feature seismic concerns.
In all, Garbarino lauded the plans for the unique site.
“It’s a good project and I’m fully supportive of it,” he said. “I think it is well done.”

way better idea than a 7 story eyesore. This is SSF single family homes, do this on Old Mission and nobody will complain
Can the taxpayer be indemnified from any lawsuits or liability that can come from building in a fault zone.
