In 2001, Caltrans Highway Operations calculated an average of 199,000 vehicles per day crossed the San Francisco-San Mateo county line, in both directions on Highway 101. At the San Mateo-Santa Clara county line, more than 210,000 automobiles passed each day. How well the Bayshore Freeway will continue to be able to accommodate his frenzied volume of traffic will be determined in the years to come.

At its inception, motorists glorified the roadway as a futuristic godsend. Today, it is vilified on a daily basis. Each day drivers curse the mind-numbing traffic jams which can face them any time, day or night. Still, the Bayshore Freeway remains the major transportation artery of the Peninsula.
