Embattled San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia was ordered to perform community service, complete a first-time offender drunk driving program and pay nearly $1,500 in fines after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor DUI charge in a Santa Clara County courtroom yesterday.
The quarterback was taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence just before 2 a.m. on Jan. 14 near his alma mater San Jose State University.
At the time of his arrest, officers administered a Breathalyzer test that indicated Garcia had a blood-alcohol level of .214. He spent the night in Santa Clara County Jail and was released at about 9:30 a.m.
Garcia entered his plea in absentia and was not present in court yesterday. His attorney, Steve Manchester, entered the guilty plea on behalf of his client before Superior Court Judge Thomas Hastings. Garcia also admitted to the enhancement of having a high blood alcohol level.
According to Manchester, Garcia received the standard sentence for a first time DUI offender.

Garcia received three years probation, was ordered to pay $1,491 in fines, will have his driver's license restricted for 180 days, must enter and complete a first-time offender DUI program and perform eight days of community service, with one day credit for the time he spent in jail.
The restricted license will allow Garcia to drive to and from work, his community service and the DUI program.
Manchester said his client, who recently signed with the Cleveland Browns after being released from his contract with the 49ers, is ready to move on.
"He did what he's done from the outset of this, which is to accept responsibility for what he's done,'' Manchester.
"He wanted to get this over, get it behind him, and move on with his life."
