A Menlo Park gangmember convicted of murdering 21-year-old Christopher Baker in East Palo Alto in an act of gang retaliation was sentenced to life in prison without parole Thursday, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office.
Jerry Coneal, 22, received a consecutive sentence of 25 years to life in prison for using the firearm that shot and killed Baker while he was attending an Oct. 5, 2012, memorial for another murdered gangmember, according to prosecutors.
A jury allegedly deliberated for two and a half days before delivering Coneal’s guilty verdict in August, ending a 29-day trial, according to prosecutors.
Though Coneal’s case has come to a close, three more murder trials in the complex criminal case dubbed “Operation Sunny Day” remain. With crimes spanning September 2012 through December 2013, the “Sunny Day” indictments focused on 16 people with charges ranging from first-degree murder and drug trafficking to robbery and conspiracy, according to prosecutors.
Also accused of killing Baker, Miguel Rivera, 26, pleaded no contest to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 49 years and four months in state prison in July, according to prosecutors previously.
Coneal will be required to pay restitution to Baker’s mother in an amount yet to be determined, in addition to $10,000 toward a restitution fund. Baker’s mother attending Coneal’s sentencing Thursday and allegedly reported that Coneal winked at her as he was being led out of the courtroom, according to prosecutors.
