A Healdsburg man accused of vehicular manslaughter in a fatal crash in which he allegedly caused a head-on collision on Highway 1 in February pleaded not guilty Thursday, according to San Mateo County prosecutors.
The crash occurred near Pescadero on Feb. 10 when Jazz Orion Hayhurst-Loric, 28, sped up to 70 mph in a 55 mph zone, crossed over the road’s double-yellow lines on a blind curve and ran head-on into opposing traffic, District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.
Kevin Archibald, a 49-year-old resident of Redwood City, suffered major injuries and was pronounced dead at Stanford Hospital.
Hayhurst-Loric also suffered major injuries. His car caught fire after the crash, and a witness who helped extract him from the vehicle said that he did not smell like alcohol but did appear to be under the influence of methamphetamine.
Another witness at the scene corroborated that account, according to prosecutors.
Hayhurst-Loric is out on $260,000 bail. He returns to court for a preliminary hearing on Feb. 27.
Defense attorney Timothy Palm did not immediately respond to a request for comment on his client’s behalf.
