Local domestic violence coffers received a $164,000 boost yesterday from the county and from the pockets of those convicted of family abuse.
The Board of Supervisors gave the money to Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse during its regular meeting yesterday. The funds actually came from fees charged to people convicted of domestic violence. The money is funneled into a trust fund that is then disbursed to domestic violence programs. The $164,000 represents the fees collected by the county's Probation Department since 1995.
"It is extremely appropriate that these funds, which come directly from the perpetrators of domestic violence, can be used to enhance needed services of the victims, including the children who are significantly impacted by such events. Also, the county's DV model is one of the most effective programs in the state. We attribute this to the collaborative relationships between involved agencies," said Loren Buddress, director of the probation department.
CORA plans to use the money to bolster existing counseling, 24-hour services and housing. It also helps re-establish a program for children's services.
CORA formed in 2003 after the merger of the county's two domestic violence agencies, Sor Juana Ines and the Center for Domestic Violence.
