Demolition has begun on former Crestmoor High School buildings to make way for a new housing development with 155 single-family homes.
It marks a turning point for the property, which has gone through a variety of uses since Crestmoor High School closed in 1980, San Bruno City Manager Alex McIntyre said.
“It’ll be nice to have what had been an underutilized site be a productive part of the community,” he said. “We’re moving projects along, which is really nice.”
The Crestmoor property, owned by the San Mateo Union High School District, was designated as surplus land in 2019 after a continuation school that was previously housed there was relocated to Burlingame, according to the district’s website.
The Board of Trustees voted to move forward with a sale of the property to SummerHill Homes in 2021. SummerHill Homes subsequently sold that property to Toll Brothers, that will now be managing the project.

The proposed development will feature 155 single-family homes with four-bedroom layouts, 24 of which will be affordable, McIntyre said.
Another element of the agreement is the creation of permanent athletic fields at the new site. The San Bruno Community Foundation contributed a $3.4 million grant for the development of eight artificial turf soccer fields, which will be hugely beneficial for San Bruno’s youth soccer and sports leagues, Executive Director Leslie Hatamiya said previously.
The sale of the property — which is set to close February 2025 — as well as the new housing and development of the soccer fields are all a boon for the community, McIntyre said.
It’s particularly a benefit for San Bruno, which has struggled with stagnated housing production for years.
“I think there’s a number of wins,” McIntryre said. “The school district receives a windfall of money, the city and community get new housing stock, and we’re also going to get a state-of-the-art soccer complex.”
