Aid

Legal Aid Society staff attorney Jennifer Horne has taken on an increasing number of immigration cases in the past 20 years.

As debates over U.S. immigration policy changes swirl across the nation, county officials and residents stirred to respond are throwing their support behind expanding legal services available to immigrants here.

Having committed $764,000 to an immigrant defense fund in June, county officials are hoping to allay the fears of those who may be affected by recent changes to the country’s immigration policies. For more than a year, the county has been working with Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County and three of its partner agencies — Catholic Charities of San Mateo County, Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto and International Institute of the Bay Area. The partnerships offer workshops on how to apply for U.S. citizenship or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival, among other legal statuses, help immigrants involved in enforcement actions understand what their rights are and assist those who qualify apply for visas or immigration benefits.

Please remember this the next time the country asks you the taxpayer for more money. Giving people who have entered are country illegally or have illegally overstayed their visa taxpayer money is an insult to the citizens and taxpayers of this county. Please call your supervisor and give them an earful on what a disgrace this decision is. We on the opposing side have a great campaign issue next election and we are going to use it, time to vote these people out of office. Why not let it go to a vote of the people, they know it would have no chance. Disgusting.

Well said. No wonder so many people cheat on their taxes.

Maybe the politicians of San Mateo can respect the hardworking tax payers whom they represent by asking the the nations of origin to help pay for the legal costs of immigrants (legal or illegal)? It's always easy to spend other people's money for altruistic purposes.

Well said.

In the meantime we have fires burning out of control throughout California; the helipcopters being used are old and outdated and not doing a good enough job, firetrucks are being borrowed and brought in from other counties throughout the state People are losing their homes, everything they have worked hard at to achieve. That is what is sad! But go ahead, lets give all our money and help to people whom aren't from here nor contribute anything. These same people who won't fix their own country but feel it is easier to come here and take advantage of us. What benefit to society is it to bring the extreme poor here? The politicians do not know how to prioritize and it is sad they don't care of the very people who voted them to office. What a shame and disgrace!

Fires burning out of control in California. Old equipment being used such as the helicopters - old and outdated, firetrucks being borrowed from other counties. People losing homes and their lives. The priorities of our politicians are so wrong.

This just completely boggles the mind.

Do the immigrants not pay rent (property tax, indirect;y through payments to landlords) or sales tax like everyone else? I think they do contribute and pay perhaps more than others, given their often precarious living situation they do not have the luxury shopping online, they are shopping locally. I did not notice a funding source in the article, but if it is from sales tax then it is completely appropriate as it is a service immigrants are in need of .

The tax cheat and the fraudster contribute a lot of money to society as well, should we ignore their crimes. Why have laws when people are only taking them as suggestions. Are we a nation of laws or not?

Thomas Morgan

I did not specify between legal and illegal. It appears to be solely your assumption. For the cheats and fraudsters you mentioned there is a free public defender program, not sure what your point is.

Let's not kid ourselves. The local politicians see a windfall in adding voters to the Democratic ticket through the motor voter law. Why would they care about the legal voters whom they have in the bag already. Some of the comments on this website confirm gross group think which is grist for the local politicians' mill. Catering to the illegal immigrants is big business for the attorneys and politicians. The legal residents of this County be damned. We should voted the whole bunch out of office the next time we have a chance and return to normalcy.

Point well taken - time to shut-off the spigot that flows into the County of San Mateo.
