Notre Dame High School's literary magazine won a first place award in the American Scholastic Press Association's annual magazine competition.
"Your publication shows talent and energy by your writers, artists, editors, photographers, copy editors, layout designers, and advisor," ASPA noted in its evaluation of the Belmont school.
The editorial staff included co-editors Joanna Perey and Rachel Rivera, secretary Hedy Wong, Leah Denman, Rose Friedland, Mandy Hoff, Jacqueline Koo, Michelle Rick, Alexandria Toschi and Michelle Yee.
English teacher Annemarie Cota is the advisor.
In other Notre Dame news, Therese Folco's first year Spanish students donned the sidewalks with flags of Latin America and Spain to honor Hispanic Heritage Month. With miniature flags in hand, the students made giant-sized flags with colored chalk.

Canada College lecture series explores surf culture in a series entitled "Surfing: Beyond the Wave" which examines history, science and sociology of surfing.
The Canada College chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a national honors society, is exploring the history, sports, science, media and fashions associated with surfing. The idea for the lecture series originated when the Phi Theta Kappa national headquarters challenged its 1,200 chapters across the country to look at popular culture and how it has shaped who we are.

"Our students wanted to explore a local aspect of popular culture that has had an impact on the broader culture beyond our area," said Paul Roscelli, economics professor at the college and one of the faculty advisors to Canada's Phi Theta Kappa chapter.
Roscelli said the students recognized that the Bay Area has Mavericks Beach, home of to one of three of the most dangerous and well-known surf spots in the world. But they also recognized the challenge of exploring a topic that many people see as superficial and one-dimensional.
"The students did some homework and noted that surfing language, clothes, the sport, the science behind riding the waves, the music and the movies have had a broad, deep and substantive effect on our culture," Roscelli said.
The lectures will be on Oct. 6, Oct. 13, Nov. 17 and Dec. 8. All of the lectures will start at noon and are scheduled to be held in Building 3, Room 148. The Canada College campus is located at 4200 Farm Hill Blvd. in Redwood City.
