High Tech High Bayshore will keep its doors open next fall as the San Mateo County Board of Education decided to temporarily take on its charter.
On Wednesday night, the board initially voted 4-2 to deny the county's role in chartering High Tech High, then granted it a year-long charter in a second vote to keep its 71 students in school. Trustee Ted Lempert suggested the temporary solution, and he and Trustee Jim Cannon voted for the county to be the school's chartering authority.
High Tech High, formerly called San Carlos High School, was originally chartered by the San Carlos Elementary School District. State rules changed to forbid an elementary school district from chartering a high school, and it changed its mission and name to High Tech High - geared toward team projects in math, science and technology.
Board Trustee Memo Morantes said on Thursday he worried High Tech High, which is moving from San Carlos to Redwood City this summer, might sap students away from Sequoia High School, which is "doing a great job."
"Our interest remains the kids interest, and this allows them to come back in the fall," Morantes said.
