Plans are starting to take shape for the mixed-use project expected to replace the Peninsula Museum of Art in Burlingame, as officials are weighing unique designs for the project comprised of commercial and office space as well as housing.

Burlingame Community Development Director Kevin Gardiner said plans were submitted to build 60 units, 148,327 square feet of office space and an additional 7,588 square feet of office space at 1766 El Camino Real.

What does it say about a community that loses such a valuable and amazing resource as the Peninsula Museum of Art, one of its finest cultural and educational resources? I urge the City to step in and help retain this organization. Be a better community than your neighbors - who can only think to build block buildings that exclude the arts and ultimately weaken civic life for everyone.

The peninsula needs a cultural focus. The Redwood City museum is historical and local. The Peninsula museum is both an art museum and a place for artists to work and gather mutual support for their efforts. It is unique in this regard.

The political as well as business and residential community should step up. Arts and appreciation of the arts is a valuable part of a complete intellectual environment. The community needs to push for a worthwhile and admirable solution.
