It’s game, set, match for the Broadway Tennis Center, as the expansive recreation facility abutting Highway 101 is slated to soon close and take on new ownership.
The center is slated to shutter after three years of operations at Edwards Court near the Tesla facility adjacent to Rollins Road and the Bay Club will take over after the end of May.
Anne Matta, who co-founded the center with her husband Horacio, expressed her appreciation to local tennis enthusiasts who enjoyed the facility.
“We thank you for your loyalty, and encourage you to continue to use the facility under new ownership,” she said in an email.
She added the structural support offered by the Bay Club, which operates similar facilities across the state, would likely benefit the local tennis community.
“The Bay Club, a more experienced and larger company, with a record of customer satisfaction stretching over many years, will be taking over,” she said.
The Mattas constructed and opened the 62,715-square-foot center in 2015. It offers six full-sized courts to players ranging in experience from amateur to professional. Clinics, private lessons and court rentals were also available, among the specialized services.
For ongoing clinics, those will continue through Saturday, May 12. Anyone with credits to purchase lessons, rentals or other services are encouraged to redeem by Friday, June 1.
Beyond the 50,000 square feet reserved for courts, the facility also offers an additional 12,715 square feet comprised of a reception area, stretching space, locker rooms, offices and storage space. A cafe, Ping-Pong tables, video review room and restrooms are on the second floor.
Matta said she is unsure whether the Bay Club will preserve the facility’s current name. The network of recreational facilities operates similar clubs throughout San Francisco and Los Angeles, with an outlet in Redwood Shores. Emails to the club for comment were not responded to in time for this article.

Both Mattas are retired tennis professionals, living in Woodside. Anne played on the Women’s Tennis Association tour for three years, and Horacio played on the Association of Tennis Professionals tour for five years.
The facility ran from 6 a.m. until midnight, with no membership fee. It also offered summer camps, senior groups, afternoon skills clinics, corporate leagues, open courts and classes for kids between 2 and 5 years old, among other services.
When the center opened, Horacio Matta said the desire to launch the facility was not driven by entrepreneurial desire but an interest in spreading an enthusiasm for tennis across the Peninsula.
“It’s more than overwhelming. We are really out of our league. We are just tennis players,” he said during a hard hat tour of the facility just before its grand opening in January 2015.
When it opened, officials recognized the center as part of a burgeoning slate of recreational facilities opening along Rollins Road with Nothing But Hoops, Bay Badminton Center, Prime Time Athletic Fitness Club, Gokart Racer, Crossfit, Burlingamer and other similar nearby facilities.
With the center entering its last month though, Anne Matta said she hopes tennis enthusiasts and other sports fans across the Peninsula will continue patronizing the new operators.
“We hope to continue to see them at the center enjoying the great game of tennis,” she said.
Austin, perhaps you should have checked out that GoKart Racer and the Badminton club have since closed. A twin ice rink running at full capacity was proposed for this site but instead they built a beautiful, but mostly empty, tennis center.
