A judge yesterday imposed $500,000 bail for a 21-year-old man accused of shooting a Redwood City security guard in the legs last month, giving him the chance for release pending the outcome of his case.
Julio Lara has been in custody on no-bail status since his Oct. 16 arrest but defense attorney Jeff Boyarsky yesterday pushed for a set amount. Lara remained at the San Mateo County Jail as of Thursday afternoon and will need 10 percent of the total to post bond.
Lara is charged with attempted murder, assault, drug possession, gun possession and discharging a firearm. He pleaded not guilty and was ordered back to court Dec. 7 for a preliminary hearing, according to court records clerks.
According to Redwood City police, Lara assaulted a man he thought insulted his girlfriend at Mr. Frog’s, a Brewster Avenue bar, on Oct. 8 shortly after midnight. After a security guard threw Lara from the bar, he allegedly grabbed a pistol from his vehicle and fired a single shot through both of the man’s legs.
The couple fled but a cab driver passed the license plate number to police.
Redwood City police staked out the girlfriend’s car and followed her to East Palo Alto where she picked up Lara. The police, California Highway Patrol and San Francisco police worked together to arrest the couple as they drove north on Highway 101.
