San Mateo police officers responded to the 800 block of Highland Avenue on a suspicious circumstance report involving possible mail theft Wednesday at about 8:17 a.m.
Upon arrival, officers were alerted to a departing vehicle driven by a single occupant that matched the description provided by the reporting party. Officers conducted a traffic stop for a license plate violation and determined the driver, Shomari Evans, 46, of Campbell, had an active felony warrant, according to police.
During a search of the vehicle incident to Evans’ arrest, officers located a large amount of mail belonging to multiple individuals, as well as a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia and lock-picking tools. Evans was subsequently arrested for first-degree burglary, petty theft with two or more prior convictions, possession of a controlled substance with two or more prior convictions, possession of stolen property, possession of burglary tools, and the outstanding warrant. Evans was transported to the San Mateo County Jail where he was booked for his charges, according to police.
