A 66-year old homeless man pleaded no contest to one count of bank robbery for attempting to rob the Redwood City Chase Bank and has been sentenced to six years in state prison, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

The man, Arthur Gillespie, had completed a parole violation sentence and was taken to the Salvation Army Treatment Facility by his parole officer on June 24. That same day, he allegedly entered the Chase Bank and slipped a demand letter to a teller, pretending he had a gun in a brown paper bag. An employee hit the silent alarm, the DA’s Office said, and the building was quickly surrounded by police officers. Gillespie surrendered to officers and allegedly told them he just wanted enough money to get back to his family in Boston.
