SAN JOSE — A California judge who faces a recall vote over his handling of a sexual assault case involving a former Stanford University swimmer said he supports the movement to improve the way sexual assault victims are treated but that ousting him won’t help the cause.

Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Aaron Persky spoke for the first time against efforts to recall him in an interview Thursday.

Judge Aaron Persky fails to acknowledge the obvious conflict of interest he had. He should have recused himself from this case period. He himself was the captain of the Stanford Lacrosse Team. It's that simple, avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Persky's recall will aid change because he will not be on the bench to casually dismiss convicted rapists in the future. He did make himself the face of rape culture because of his decisions. Recalling a judge is so onerous a task that judges will not fear this one removal. Imagine many judges may have been astonished by his decision in this case.
