The first quake was measured at a depth of 5 miles. The aftershock was measured at 4.5 miles.
The closer to the surface an earthquake occurs, the more ground shaking and potential damage it will cause.
A 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck near San Ramon on Friday morning, the latest small earthquake to shake the area in recent weeks, according to the USGS.
There have been a number of small earthquakes since early November in the area near the Contra Costa and Alameda county lines along the Calaveras Fault, the survey said.
