Often called "the bloviator" by the tabloids for spewing hot air on a variety of topics from politics to the environment, Alec Baldwin blew into town to announce his support for an offshore wind park being pitched by the Long Island Power Authority.
Baldwin, who grew up in Massapequa, has recorded radio spots stressing the need to reduce Long Island's dependence on fossil fuels by adopting clean alternative energy sources, including the wind park.
The Power Authority and FPL Energy have filed an application with the Army Corps of Engineers to create a "wind energy park" featuring 40 turbines in an 8-square-mile area in the Atlantic Ocean south of Jones Beach. If approved, the park could be in operation by 2008, officials said.
Other supporters include Phillipe Cousteau, the grandson of marine scientist Jacques Cousteau.
Baldwin, who arrived Thursday in Mineola, was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 2003's "The Cooler."
The 47-year-old actor says in the radio ads that "harvesting our offshore winds to produce pollution-free energy is a forward-looking solution that protects public health, the environment and the region's quality of life."

The ads are expected to air on several Long Island-based radio stations.

Snoop Dogg is seeking $2 million from a car dealership that he accuses of having misappropriated his image and speech pattern in its advertisements.
In a lawsuit filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court, the 33-year-old rapper, born Calvin Broadus, alleges that the Gary Barbera Enterprises ads constitute trademark infringement since they use verbiage that is "confusingly similar to the Snoop Dogg trademark."
The ads show Snoop next to the words "Is Bar-BIZZLE The SH-izzle?" One ad is similar to his line in a recent Chrysler TV commercial with Lee Iacocca: "If the ride is more fly, then you must buy."
