A German shepherd named Buddy was the first seeing eye dog in the United States. His master was Morris Frank, a blind college student from Nashville, Tennessee, who heard about seeing eye dogs in Switzerland. Frank brought Buddy to the United States from Switzerland in 1928. The two became famous when they got the attention of reporters, who were amazed to see the pair cross busy New York streets safely.
