On March 6, 2010 at the Stanford Cancer Center, JoyLife Club partnered with the Stanford Cancer Center to implement a cancer clinical trials education forum, for Chinese programs and community liaisons serving the Asian community.
The City of Millbrae’s Mayor Paul Seto, awarded commendations that were accepted by Dr. Beverly Mitchell, Stanford Cancer Center virector. The commendations honored the contributions of the Stanford Cancer Center and Stanford Hospital and Clinics, on addressing cancer health disparities of Asian Americans.
The forum provided education about cancer clinical trials, why they are important for health and medicine, and the need to educate the community. Only 3 percent to 4 percent of adults participate in cancer clinical trials. Accrual rates for ethnic minorities are much lower at 1% or less. Lack of participation can limit advancements in scientific knowledge about cancer prevention, screening, diagnostics, genetics, treatment and supportive care. Therefore partnership and education is critical for raising knowledge about clinical trials, increasing recruitment, and identifying ways to improve participant experience in a clinical trial.
JoyLife Club, a cancer support group affiliated with Herald Cancer Care Network, will continue hosting the educational series on cancer clinical trials and caregiving (Mandarin and Cantonese) in various San Mateo County locations. The forums are funded by Stanford Hospital and Clinics. JoyLife Club is collaborating with the Stanford Cancer Center and American Cancer Society to ensure the success of the events.
