A new Redwood City restaurant serving up steaks, chops and craft cocktails in a courthouse-themed setting is set to open this month — tentatively April 24 — at the former Mandaloun location in the city’s Theater District.
The meat-heavy dinner menu at Courthouse 2021 will feature a blend of homey and sophisticated dishes, which will be complemented by extensive appetizer and cocktail menus catering to the happy hour crowd, said Executive Consulting Chef Munther Massarweh.
“We’re hoping to fill the gap between two generations,” he said.
Entrees also include pastas, seafood and vegetarian options, and appetizers range from sliders and fried chicken to caviar and oysters on the half shell. The exhibition kitchen is equipped with a wood-fired oven to heat up a variety of flatbreads.
The restaurant features a full bar and will offer at least 150 wines from California mostly as well as Old World imports.
Co-owners Fadi Hanani, Mark Khoury and Maher Fakhouri partnered with award-winning designer Michael Brennan to handle the restaurant’s interior, which is meant to have the feel of a courthouse or law library. The space is outfitted with leather-paneled walls, Pullman booths and wrought iron light fixtures and chandeliers, along with various themed props, including a podium and scales of justice.
The redesign transformed the right exterior window into a second entrance to the bar and lounge area, which seats 34 and is a separate space from the main dining room, which seats 66. A heated and trellis-shaded outdoor patio seats 75, and will host private and culinary events in the future.
Massarweh said the restaurant’s menu was the result of several months of community input. He said there was especially high demand for an after-work bar serving craft cocktails that isn’t always packed.
Khoury said he was attracted to Redwood City’s growth, and he and his partners had been trying to find a place in town for the past three years.
“We love it on Broadway, which I think is the best street in Redwood City, with lots of great restaurants and room for a lot more,” he said.
Bay Area natives Hanani and Khoury are new to the restaurant industry, but surrounded by seasoned restaurateurs: Fakhouri owned Mandaloun and co-founded the Crepevine chain, while Massarweh, in addition to chef and restaurant consulting work, has opened his own line of restaurants, including Wildfox in Novato and Nico’s 1508 in Berkeley.
For now, Courthouse 2021 will be open for dinner and happy hour with plans to open for lunch and brunch by the summer.
The Courthouse 2021 Restaurant is located at 2021 Broadway, near Main Street, in Redwood City. Visit thecourthouse2021.com for more information.
