The Bearcats (1-0 PAL De Anza, 4-2 overall) opened PAL De Anza Division play with their single most productive ground game of the season, rushing for 380 yards to get back in the win column at Mountain View (1-1, 2-4).
Senior Jovani Hernandez Cruz and junior Lukas Fitzgerald accounted for 250 of those yards. Fitzgerald totaled 20 carries for a team-high 126 yards and one touchdown, while Hernandez Cruz had 18 carries for a season-high 124 yards and two touchdowns. Seniors Tyce Copus and Cameron Barry also ran for a touchdown apiece.
The win marks the second straight year San Mateo has defeated the Spartans in head-to-head play. The Bearcats have now gained 1,920 yards this season, with 1,862 yards on the ground. The team’s previous season high was 344 rushing yards in a 28-0 win over Los Altos in the Aug. 29 season opener.
Woodside 31, Hillsdale 0
Woodside (1-0 PAL Ocean, 6-0 overall) won its sixth straight to start the year, shutting out Hillsdale (0-1, 2-4) to open PAL Ocean Division play at Mazzoncini Stadium. It marks the third shutout of the year for the Wildcats, who have outscored opposing teams 269-46 this season.
Senior Daniel Torres logged two interceptions on defense, while totaling eight carries for 35 yards and a touchdown on offense. Woodside needed just 190 rushing yards as a team, led by senior Evan Frampton’s seven carries for 48 yards. Sophomore JJ Lange rushed for a TD, and had a 15-yard scoring catch from junior Charlie Dalrymple for another. Senior running back Alex Valencia also rushed for a score.Â
Dating back to last season, Woodside has now won eight in row, matching a winning streak from 2022. The program’s previous best was 13 straight wins when the Wildcats ran the table in 2004.Â
King’s Academy 45, Burlingame 7
The Panthers (0-1 PAL De Anza, 3-3 overall) dropped their PAL De Anza Division opener at home against the King’s Academy (1-0, 5-1). Sophomore quarterback Ricky Gutierrez threw three touchdown passes for the Knights, and senior Justin Turner totaled 15 tackles, including a sack, and had a pick-6 for a defensive score. Burlingame threw three interceptions in the game.
