While San Francisco's Fleet Week has been going on all week, anticipation grows for the scheduled Saturday and Sunday events despite the notable absence of many U.S. armed forces because of the ongoing government shutdown.
Serving as the official West Coast celebration of the 250th anniversary of the United States Navy, events such as Fleet Fest, boat tours and the celebration's famous air show are set to take place across San Francisco, especially the city's northern waterfront.
The highly anticipated performance of the Blue Angels and annual parade of ships were suspended following the government shutdown at the beginning of October. Without a funding package passed through Congress, U.S. armed forces were instructed to only perform essential activities which meant an appearance at Fleet Week was not likely.
However, armed forces from allied countries who were already scheduled to participate in this year's celebration stepped up to ensure the annual event could still be full of activities.
The Colombian Navy's 250-foot tall ship ARC Gloria sailed under the Bay Bridge on Thursday and will remain on display at piers 15-17 throughout the weekend for visitors.
Friday morning saw the arrival of the Royal Canadian Navy Ship Nanaimo to Pier 19. Ship tours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Canada not only sent vessels to San Francisco, but also the headliners of this year's airshow, the Royal Canadian Air Force's 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, commonly referred to as the Snowbirds.
Fleet Fest, the accompanying festival of exhibits, vehicle showcases and resource fair, will take place at Fisherman's Wharf on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m for free.
The airshows will happen from Friday until Sunday, starting at 12:15 p.m., if weather conditions permit. While Fisherman's Wharf is the site of Fleet Fest, spectators can position themselves across the northern San Francisco waterfront to watch.
Schedule of airshow performances:
12:15 p.m. — Opening Ceremonies
12:25 p.m. — United Airlines 777 Demonstration
12:37 p.m. — Jack Aces P-51 Demo Team
