I enjoy many of your articles within the S.M. Daily Journal but recently I was reading the article on 'Teachers Being Forced To Flee' (SMDJ 9/9-9/10) and was left disturbed. Not disturbed because of the plight of the teachers (That is an issue I have been aware of and can empathize with since birth, for my parents are teachers.) but because of the blinded remarks made by Superintendent Mohr.
We live in the most expensive area in the entire United States of America and he truly believes $40,000/yr starting is "paid well". No, that's not paid well that's getting by. Teachers fulfill one (if not THE) most important duty in society, not to mention time consumption and even greater mass, mentally, influential contact with our future. They should be getting 6-figures to start (How much are your children/future worth to you?). We spend more on the cosmetics of our physical structures than we do on the cosmetics of our social future. And then they wonder why teachers leave, hate their jobs, students cut class, fail exams, show lack of interest; Because they are just mimicking that which we show them through our own actions.
Parents need to one get off their lazy behinds and spend the time it takes to lend a helping hand to the teachers in 1) their child's education 2) better pay for the one responsible for their child's education and 3) getting what is necessary so that they are fully satisfied with the position and the duties are to fulfill.
