The Terra Nova Tigers and Mills Vikings hadn’t met in girls’ basketball action in five years. In that 2013-14 season, the two Peninsula Athletic League squads played twice, both games coming in the postseason. Terra Nova rolled to a 60-20 win in the first meeting, that in the PAL tournament. A week later, Mills answered back with a 36-32 win in the Central Coast Section Division III playoffs.
Thursday night’s showdown in the second round of the Leo LaRocca Sand Dune Classic at St. Ignatius High School played out similarly over the course of two halves. With one exception — Terra Nova was able to temper Mills’ response this time around as the Tigers got past the Vikings 48-46.
The Tigers (4-5 overall) dominated the first half, leading 22-8 at one point. Then, after Terra Nova took a 27-16 lead into halftime, Mills made a run at it.
Senior point guard Kaela Stonebarger led the Vikings to a 30-point surge in the second half. Stonebarger finished with a game-high 13 points, including dropping a critical 3 in the third quarter.
But Terra Nova answered with senior guard Morgan Fillipo, who did not play the previous night due to injury in a 44-40 win over Windsor. Fillipo’s presence was felt in her return both sides of the ball. Not only did she score a team-high 11 points, she was the Tigers’ answer on defense to the always dangerous Stonebarger.
“She had a high motor,” Terra Nova head coach Kawann Summerville said of Fillipo’s performance coming off an injury. “She played the whole game. She guarded [Stonebarger] the whole time.”
Holding Mills’ point guard to 13 points took a solid effort. In the tournament opener the previous night, Stonebarger shared the game-high of 25 points in a 52-46 loss to St. Ignatius.

Shooting wise, Terra Nova relied on distributing the rock. Sophomore forward Sierra Koloamatangi totaled 10 points, sophomore guard Ashley Ng added nine, senior guard Lisa Luhrs had eight and senior guard Caitlyn Carnecer had six.
“So we had a really balanced attack today,” Summerville said.
Luhrs contributed one of the biggest shots of the night midway through the third quarter. Mills opened the second half on a 5-0 run, closing the lead to 27-21, when Lurhs knocked down one of her two 3s. Koloamatangi also converted twice from beyond the arc for the Tigers.
Summerville said the reason for his team’s fast start in the first half was due to taking apart Mills’ zone defense.
“Too many open shooters at that point,” Summerville said.
The Vikings (7-4) quickly shifted to a consistent man-to-man look, which proved the equalizer.
Terra Nova closes out play in the round-robin tournament Saturday against host St. Ignatius at 4:30 p.m. Mills tips off at 3:30 p.m. against Windsor.
