The Terra Nova Tigers made quite an impression with their program’s first appearance in the Tim Cole Memorial Tournament.
The Tigers (8-3 overall) brought home the tournament title from American High School in Fremont with three straight wins, finishing off the trifecta with a 60-52 victory over Piedmont Hills in Saturday’s tourney championship game.
Piedmont Hills (9-1) entered the game riding an undefeated nine-game win streak, and looked to be zeroing in on win No. 10 after taking a 48-44 lead over Terra Nova midway through the fourth quarter. But the Tigers closed the game on a 16-4 run, with sophomore Justin Milch scoring eight of his team-high 20 points in the final period.
“This was a good week for us,” Terra Nova head coach Kenny Milch said. “We shot the ball well and we won the battle in the paint.”
Justin Milch earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors after knocking down his season-high for points. But it was senior big man Jared Julian who scored six straight points to overcome the fourth-quarter deficit.
With the Tigers trailing 48-44, Julian earned a trip to the free-throw line and hit the first attempt. While his second one missed, senior Jack Bellinger came up with the offensive rebound, then kicked out to Julian who popped a 3-pointer to tie it.
“It was an unconventional 4-point play,” Kenny Milch said.

Terra Nova turned in another offensive board to take the lead, with Julian crashing to score 2 on a put-back with under two minutes to play, giving the Tigers a 50-48 advantage. Justin Milch followed with his third 3-pointer of the game to give Terra Nova all the points it would need with a 53-48 advantage.
Justin Milch converted a slew of free throws down the stretch to seal the win. The 6-2 sophomore — the third Milch brother to play for his father at the Pacifica high school — shot 9 of 10 from the stripe throughout.
Bellinger added 13 points for Terra Nova. Junior guard Jordan Salgado had 10 points, and was named to the all-tournament team while hitting a perfect 18 of 18 free throws through the three games. Senior forward Dylan McAdams also earned all-tournament honors.
The Tigers advanced to the championship game with wins over Foothill-Pleasanton 56-47 Thursday, followed by a 66-61 win over Abbotsford-British Columbia Friday.
“The competition was good and, for us, it was nice to see these guys as a group rise to the occasion,” Kenny Milch said.
The tournament title marks Terra Nova’s first in any non-conference, preseason tournament in 10 years. The Tigers last took home a tournament trophy from Jefferson’s Blue and Gold Tournament in 2008.
