Former Sequoia High standout Tink Reynoso is the school's new baseball head coach, the Daily Journal has learned.
"It's been an ongoing thing for a while," Reynoso said. "It's a dream job."
Reynoso, 52, served as assistant varsity coach at Woodside the past five seasons and was an assistant football coach at Sequoia the past few seasons. He is a 1971 graduate of Sequoia, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was named to the school's Hall of Fame the same year. He was the Sequoia Athlete of the Year in 1971.
Reynoso has a long history on the Peninsula. Two of his children went to Woodside and another is currently at Sequoia. He coached Little League and senior division baseball in Redwood City for the past 20 years.
He said he wants to bring back the camaraderie to Sequoia like he enjoyed during his high school years.
"I want to try and bring that tradition back, like the 70s, when I played here," Reynoso said. "Getting the [frosh-soph] and varsity teams together and their families. Get the parents involved. You used to get the whole community to come out before."
Reynoso takes over for Glen Simms, who decided not to return after last season, said athletic director Ed Huber. The Cherokees went 10-10 last season, finishing second in the Peninsula Athletic League's Lake Division, which is a "C" league, although division champion Menlo School went on to win a Central Coast Section title.
"I want to be out of the Lake Division," Reynoso said. "We have the kids to do it."
