Girls’ basketball
Aragon 48, Carlmont 47
The Dons escaped Belmont with a one-point win over the Scots in the PAL BAy Division opener for both.
Aragon (1-0 PAL Bay, 9-6 overall) led by a point at halftime, 24-23, and extended it to a two-point, 35-33, going into the fourth quarter before holding off Carlmont (0-1, 7-8) in the final eight minute.
Maya Pappas led the way for the Dons, scoring a game-high 16 points. Angie Alvarenga added 11 in the win.
Carlmont was paced by Willow Ihibashi-To, who finished with 15 points. Sydney Tao added 13 for the Scots.
Mills 63, Hillsdale 33
The Vikings held the Knights to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters in the Bay Division-opening rout.
Mills (1-0 PAL Bay, 9-4 overall) led 18-8 after the first quarter and 36-14 at halftime. The Vikings had 11 players get in the scoring column, led by Sofia Kwan, who finished with 10 points.
Hillsdale (0-1, 7-5) was led by Daniella Sierra, who had eight points.
Jefferson 45, Terra Nova 33
Princess Jane Waritt and Isabella Cardoza each scored 13 points to lead the Grizzlies past the Tigers in the PAL Ocean Division opener.
Jefferson (1-0 PAL Ocean, 9-6) led 23-21 at halftime, but outscored Terra Nova (0-1, 2-10) 22-12 in the second half to pull away.
The Tigers were led by Reese Kelley, who had 10 points.
Westmoor 43, Sequoia 36
The Rams rode a 16-9 first-quarter lead to the Ocean Division win over the Ravens.
Kaylie Quon went off for Westmoor (1-0 PAL Ocean, 7-4 overall), pouring in 27 points. Sequoia (0-1, 7-4) was led by Jada Crockett, who finished with 11 points.
South City 44, Oceana 34
The Warriors took a 38-17 lead at halftime and cruised to the win in the second half.
Bree Hodge and Kylee Chiva each scored 15 points to pace South City (1-0 PAL Lake, 9-6 overall) in the Lake Division opener for both teams.
Alamea Lewis had a huge game in the loss for Oceana (0-1, 9-6), going off for 24 points.
Girls’ soccer
Hillsdale 1, Menlo Atherton 0
The Fighting Knights (1-0 PAL Bay, 6-4 overall) had beaten the Bears (0-1, 2-6) just once in the last 24 games dating back to 2009 with their last win coming during the April 2021 COVID season.
Now they have two wins over the Bears thanks to a Ren Delos Reyes goal and some stellar defense to knock off the reigning PAL Bay Division champs to start their league season off on a high note.
Sequoia 2, Woodside 0
Sequioa’s (1-0 PAL Bay, 4-3-1 overall) Addison Haws scored both goals for the Ravens on Tuesday night as they were able to take down the Wildcats (0-1, 5-3) on the road.
Ashlee Landin and Emily Christman would assist both goals as the Ravens will now look ahead to M-A to hopefully start their PAL play off with a 2-0 record.
Burlingame 1, Carlmont 0
Just one second half goal was needed to separate the Panthers (1-0 PAL Bay, 6-3 overall) from the Scots (0-1, 2-6-1) on Tuesday night with Mika Haggerty being the beneficiary.
Burlingame has now won three straight, outscoring opponents 8-2 after beginning the year 3-3. They’ll look to expand this streak next against Woodside.
Ocean Division
Aragon 6, Capuchino 0
Six different players scored for the Dons (1-0 PAL Ocean, 5-3 overall) on Tuesday night as Aragon made a statement win in their league opener over the Mustangs (0-1, 2-8).
Felicity Corti was one of the stars of the night assisting on three of those goals, and Violet Calvo added two goals herself. Aragon, the reigning PAL Ocean Champs after going a perfect 10-0 in league play last season, look prime for another deep run.
Terra Nova 1, South San Francisco 0

The Tigers (1-0 PAL Ocean, 5-3-1 overall) reigned victorious over the Warriors (0-1, 5-4-2) on Tuesday night thanks to a second half strike from Ella Templin assisted by Shannon Hagemann. The Tigers have now snapped their four game winless streak where they were outscored 13-5 with another strong chance to get in the win column Thursday against Capuchino.
San Mateo 1, Half Moon Bay 0
The Bearcats (1-0 PAL Ocean, 4-5 overall) needed just one goal Tuesday night from Victoria Pena to take down the Cougars (0-1, 5-3). Kayla Lichaa would provide the assist as the Bearcats now have a 2-1 winning road record despite being just 2-4 at home.
Oceana 7, Westmoor 0
Olivia Perry scored twice and assisted on a third to lead the Sharks past the Rams.
Shalien Ekah added a pair of goals for Oceana (1-0 PAL Lake, 6-0 overall) as the Sharks scored five times in the first half.
Westmoor falls to 0-1 in PAL play and 0-2 overall.
El Camino 1, Jefferson 0
The Colts made a first-half goal stand in the win over the Grizzlies.
Mia Castillo scored the game winner off an assist from Sara Leiva for El Camino (1-0 PAL Lake, 3-9 overall).
Jefferson falls to 0-1 in league play.
Crystal 3, Castilleja 1
The Gryphons opened WBAL play with the win over the Gators to stay undefeated on the season.
Crystal (1-0 WBAL Skyline, 7-0 overall) took a 2-0 halftime lead on goals from Caroline Chen and Vivi Cowan. Kimmy Naylor rounded out the scoring in the second half by finding the back of the net off a corner kick.
Sacred Heart Prep 8, Priory 0
The Gators opened WBAL play with a rout of the Panthers.
Molly Tinsley had a big game for SHP (1-0 WBAL Foothill, 6-3-1 overall), scofing a hat trick and assisting on two other goals as the Gators took a 5-0 lead at halftime.
Marie-Kristine Djacga added a goal and an assist for SHP.
Priory falls to 0-1 in the WBAL and 1-4 overall.
Boys’ basketball
Sacred Heart Prep 80, Eastside College Prep 33
The Gators had little trouble with the Panthers in the WBAL opener for both teams.
SHP (1-0 WBAL, 9-4 overall) all but put the game away in the first quarter, outscoring ECP (0-1, 11-2) 20-5. It was the first of three quarters of 20 points or more for the Gators, who added 24 in the second quarter to lead 45-16 at halftime. They added 20 more in the third and 16 in the fourth.
SHP had three players score in double figures, led by xxx Wagner, who finished with a game-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers. TJ O’Brien and Oliver Marcin each added 10 points in the victory.
Priory 61, Pinewood 54
Priory took a 16-10 lead after the first quarter and then nursed that lead to a win over Pinewood in a WBAL opener for both squads.
Michael Hilderbrandt led the way for Priory (1-0 WBAL, 7-8 overall), scoring a team-high 13 points. Teddy Xanthopoulos added 12 as Priory drained eight 3-pointers as a team.
Pinewood (0-1, 9-4) got 18 points each from Thomas Meehleib and Josh Tian.
Menlo School 56, Crystal 19
Julian Brooks scored 15 points to lead the Knights to the easy win over the Gryphons in the WBAL opener.
Menlo (1-0 WBAL, 7-7 overall) took control of the game in the first quarter, scoring 16 unanswered points to lead 16-0 after eight minutes.
Tate Cohen added 13 points for the Knights, with Brooks and Cohen each grabbing five rebounds.
Crystal falls to o-1 in league play and 3-8 overall.
Riordan 65, Serra 48
The Crusaders sent the Padres to their second straight loss in WCAL play, pulling away in the fourth quarter for the win.
Serra (1-2 WCAL, 9-4 overall) led 30-28 at halftime and was down just three, 45-42, going into the fourth. But Riordan (3-0, 8-3) outscored the Padres 23-6 in the final eight minutes.
