Isaiah Salinda, a 2015 graduate of Serra, made the cut at the PGA Tour’s Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines in San Diego. He went 4-under over the final five holes to finish at 3-under and right on the cut number in the second round Friday.
Playing in his third PGA Tour event of the season, it is the 28 year old’s first cut after missing at the Sony Open in Hawaii and last week’s American Express.
Starting his second round at No. 10 on the tougher Torrey Pines South Course, Salinda opened bogey-bogey to drop to 1-over for the tournament. But back-to-back birdies at Nos. 3 and 4 got him back to 1-under.
He had bogeys at No. 17 and No. 1 to drop back to 1-over. A birdie at No. 5 got him back to even and followed that up with an eagle at No. 6 to move back into red numbers at 2-under. His birdie on 18 put him at 3-under for the tournament and gave him a chance to play the weekend and pick up his first paycheck of the new season.
Salinda, who won a national championship during his senior year at Stanford in 2019, had a wild front nine to open the tournament Thursday. After a par on the first, he birdied the second but followed that with a bogey on No. 3. After a par on No. 4, he went birdie-bogey-birdie-bogey-birdie to make the turn at 1-under. He stabilized on the back, reeling off seven straight pars. He briefly moved to 2-under with a birdie on No. 17, but gave it back with a bogey on 18 to end his first round at 1-under.
Justin Rose leads after a 7-under 65 Friday put him at 17-under for the tournament.
